A Bond is basically a loan to the government or a corporation, where the lender pays you a rate of interest for the loan and then repays the loan at a given date. Bonds are listed in an index started with AAA Bonds in a downward scale. AAA Bonds are considered the safest Bonds, and these ratings are given to the Government or large corporations. As you go lower down the scale, the more chance there is of your lender defaulting or being unable to repay your loan, however these bonds offer a much higher rate of interest to balance the risk. The highest risk Bonds are often known as Junk Bonds
